sunday roast at smiths bar and grill

Smith’s Bar & Grill is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Paddington. Conveniently situated in Sheldon Square it is just a stone’s throw away from the underground station

This beautiful venue consists of a restaurant, bar lounge and a year-round flower decked terrace overlooking the Grand Union Canal. There is a lively buzz to this area of London – think cool waterside dining, boats drifting by.  A slice of good summertime living!

Smith’s Bar & Grill has a modern yet traditional feel and it would appeal to all ages of friends, family and colleagues looking for relaxed comfortable dining with a touch of glamour (the classically styled cocktails are amazing).

Smith’s have recently started offering a classic Sunday roast and I was invited to sample the new menu. The Sunday roast is the pinnacle of British culture, traditionally it has always been a time for family and friends to come together.   However, as with modern life, we don’t always have the time to spent hours peeling potatoes.

So, when the opportunity arose to enjoy a great roast without the hassle I needed to check it out!

On arrival we were greeted warmly and the host took us through to the restaurant which is stunning.

It is a bright, naturally lit, airy space, filled with hanging plants and wicker lampshades which come together to give it an organic vibe.  Instantly relaxed we mulled over the mouthwatering menu (which by the way includes vegetarian options) with a deliciously chilled glass of fizz.

To start I chose the salmon tartare with Devon crab and avocado.  This was full of flavor with each element bursting on the taste buds.

My guest has the tuna tartare served with kimchi sauce and pane carasau. This dish was also light and fresh with the fish being excellent quality.

The main event for me was the free range, whole roasted poussin marinated in fresh lemon, thyme and garlic. The meat was juicy, plump and falling away from the bone (so no need to nibble in public). This came with perfectly cooked vegetables; crispy potatoes, parsnips, honey roast carrots and tender stem broccoli. This was all served with a little jug of rich glossy gravy.

My guest went straight for the 28-day matured British grass-fed chateaubriand which I am told just melted in the mouth like butter. Both beautiful plates of food were topped with a yummy Yorkshire pudding literally the size of my head!

To finish we shared the Chocolate Maki which is a flourless chocolate sponge cake with yuzu curd, dulce de leche, strawberry and hibiscus jelly coated with popped kiwicha and sweet ginger.

Finally, two steaming cups of hot sharp espresso to give us a much needed caffeine boost to get home after this fabulous carb fest.

The portions at Smith’s are generous and this really is comfort food done in an amazing way.  A perfect Sunday would be to enjoy a cracking roast at Smith’s then take the picturesque walk along Little Venice all the way to Camden.

Or alternatively drift home for a cheeky afternoon nap – well this is what lazy Sundays are for! Book a table soon at Smith’s Bar & Grill, treat yourself and go enjoy.
