Air fryer roast potatoes are a quick and easy addition to a dinner, they turn out perfectly cooked and crispy.

Using an air fryer is a much more energy efficient way of cooking than a conventional oven too, they cook much faster using much less energy in comparison.

This recipe for roast potatoes is now a big hit with my family. Air fryer roasties are simple and delicious, they can be seasoned however you feel.

I often keep the seasoning quite simple, but if you love spice, these can be a hot and spicy side dish.

One tip I always like to remind anyone when using an air fryer is to always keep it clean in-between uses. Not only will this prolong the life of the appliance but will avoid tainting the flavours of each dish you cook.

Air fryer energy savings

Once you have made an investment in the right air fryer to suit your needs, you will find that it becomes second nature to use this as your main go to method of cooking.

I didn’t believe how useful mine would become and I am not the kind of person to buy anything with doing my research first.

Studies into energy efficiency show that the average household can save around £279.66 on their energy bill per year just by switching to using an air fryer instead of a conventional oven for cooking most of their family meals. *This calculation was from a study conducted by Utilita*.

Even Uswitch have calculated that air fryer usage is much more energy efficient than a conventional cooking method, so long as you use one that suits your family needs, obviously a couple would only need a small model compared with a family with two children for instance.

Why are air fryers cheaper to run?

They simply cook food faster using hot air and take less energy to run them.

Breaking down the differences in cost per minutes. A basic 1500W air fryer on average costs around £53 in electricity per year to run while an average gas oven costs roughly £264 to run and a conventional electric oven has a cost of around £316 for the same amount of usage per year.

Once you begin to use the air fryer more often in place of your regular oven you will start to see the energy savings, the savings are very noticeable and with practice, you will start finding new ways to cook with the air fryer.

My Princess air fryer has a baking tin that slips into the air fryer basket, I’ve learnt to bake pizza, bread, apple pie, and cakes which have turned out delicious.

Downsides to an air fryer

Some of the downsides to using an air fryer are the fact that food cooks quickly and using hot air can have a drying effect which is not always preferable.

The air fryer is not the right cooking method for a casserole for example. The size could be an issue if you were cooking for a large amount of people or perhaps needed to cook several items at the same time, in which case using the whole of your oven space in a conventional oven might work out best.

Most of the large family sized appliances would accommodate cooking for a family of 4 or 5 though. It is all about buying the correct sized air fryer for your needs.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg washed potatoes.

  • 1 tbsp olive oil or an oil of your choice.

  • Seasonings to taste.

Directions

  • Start by peeling the potatoes if you prefer them peeled, I personally like them to be more rustic and leave the skins on usually.
  • Cut the potatoes into evenly sized chunks, not too big.
  • Rinse them off after chopping them and pat them thoroughly dry.
  • Put the chopped potatoes into a large bowl and drizzle the oil over them, tossing the pieces until fully covered, now add your choice of seasoning, whether it is herbs or spice or just a simple salt and pepper to season how you like them.Seasoned potatoes
  • I like to preheat my air fryer for a few minutes at 200c
  • Now open the fryer and pop in the prepared potato chunks.
  • Cook on the chip mode, or turn the heat to 200c for 18 minutes, check halfway through cooking and give them a shake about. When the cooking time is over, check that the potatoes are cooked through to your liking, you can add on a few more minutes if needed, but I find that 18 minutes is sufficient.
  • The air fryer roast potatoes should be perfectly cooked now and crispy, ready to plate up.

Tips

If you have plenty of time to prepare the potatoes you can try soaking them for half an hour in cold water to reduce the amount of starch, after draining them, you must dry them completely before cooking them. Less starch means an even more crispy finish.

These roast potatoes are a perfect addition to a Sunday dinner or used as a side dish.
