It’s something of a never ending quest of mine to create healthy, high protein, delicious low carb and keto recipes using ingredients I’ve got around the house. With this in mind, I’ve developed this Turkey Mince Taco Bowl.

This recipe is one of my favourites for a few reasons. Firstly, it’s incredibly easy to cook (the less dirty dishes the better). The macronutrients are suitable for those on a keto or low carb diet, and it can be adjusted to suit those who have no dietary restrictions.

The other reason I like this recipe is because it can be adjusted to suit your tastes. Like a spicier meal? Add jalapenos or some tabasco sauce. Have an intolerance to heat? Go with a mild chili powder like the one I’ve used here.

You can also add toppings to suit your preferences and dietary goals. From sour cream to salsa and avocado, with a side of tortilla chips (keto-friendly or not), or straight out of the bowl, the possibilities are endless.

Ingredients

  • 500 g Turkey Mince

  • 250 g Canned Tomato Puree

  • 125 ml Water

  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder

  • 1 tsp Onion Powder

  • Salt

  • Pepper

  • 1 tbsp Mild or Hot Chili Powder

Directions

  • Heat a large, nonstick frying pan over medium-high heat. When the pan is ready, place the turkey mince into it and season with the garlic, onion powder, and salt and pepper to taste.
  • Stir the seasonings well into the mince, breaking up the meat as you go along. Continue this process until the mince is no longer pink and is cooked through.turkey mince in the pan
  • Turn the heat down to low to keep the mince warm. In a bowl, whisk together the tomato puree and the water to form a sauce.
  • Add the sauce to your mince, stirring it all together nicely.
  • Once the sauce is thoroughly dispersed throughout the mince, add the chilli powder. I prefer a mild powder, but if you prefer a little more heat, feel free to spice things up.
  • Mix the chilli powder in well, and let the mince simmer on low while you prepare the toppings of your choice for your taco bowl.

Notes

  • For the Turkey Mince: Use 7% or 2% fat depending on your dietary goals. I used 2% for this recipe

Optional Toppings

This is where you get to have a bit of fun in building your Turkey Mince Taco Bowl. Choose from any of the following ingredients to create your own culinary masterpiece:

  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Onion
  • Avocado
  • Sliced Jalapenos
  • Sliced Green Chillies
  • Sliced Black Olives
  • Mild or Hot Salsa
  • Tabasco Sauce
  • Sour Cream
  • Grated Cheese

Creating Your Taco Bowl

Scoop some of the warm, turkey mince mixture into a bowl and top with your favourite additions from the list above. I recommend adding the cheese first as it will melt into the meat a bit. If you add your cold toppings first, it will cool the meat faster and you’ll miss out on the opportunity to create the cheesy goodness so many of us enjoy.

The other option here is to add some homemade keto tortilla chips to the side, or, if you’re not watching your carbs, use store bought tortilla chips or taco shells to hold your masterpiece. You can also add black, pinto, or refried beans to your bowl. The endless variety makes this recipe family friendly as well, as oftentimes not everyone has the same dietary goals.

No matter how to choose to make your taco bowl, it’s a hearty, protein-rich meal that’s easy to prepare and will leave you feeling satisfied.

Note: The calories provided in the recipe card above are for the turkey mince and sauce only. The toppings you choose to add to your bowl will change the calories per serving.
