Lincolnshire county is located in the East Midlands in England. The old historic city of Lincoln is its capital and Lincoln Cathedral is truly a sight to behold.
The cathedral was consecrated in 1092 after William the Conqueror had taken the throne of England. He built a castle not too far away from the spot, and both the castle and the cathedral still stand in the city today.
Lincolnshire boasts some beautiful coastal areas perfect for peaceful beach walks or horseback riding. Chapel St Leonards’ Village is 8 km (5 miles) north of Skegness and was once part of the parish of Mumby. This is where the name originates due to the chapel at Mumby being dedicated to Saint Leonard. “Saint Leonard of Noblac,” is the patron saint of prisoners of war, political prisoners, captives, imprisoned people, women in labour and horses.
Skegness is one of the largest holiday resorts in the area, and is where you’ll find Fantasy Island, rollercoasters and Butlins holiday park, plus many other attractions, such as the sea life centre. Chapel St Leonards’ has all the amenities one could hope for, including plenty of accommodation, shops, cafes, pubs, more.
There’s lots of wildlife to be seen in this county, including seals. There are 4 thriving Grey Seal pupping colonies on England’s East Coast including Donna Nook in Lincolnshire.
Tattershall Castle is another example of the history in Lincolnshire with its 130 ft (40 metre) high battlements from which you can see for miles across the beautiful Lincolnshire countryside. The sights from above show more of the area’s history, including the double moat surrounding the castle, the lovely St Mary’s church close by, and the Cromwell estate, now owned and looked after by The National Trust.
Another National Trust property in the county is Belton House which features the Trust’s largest adventure playground. Belton house was built for Sir John Brownlow in the 1680s and has stunning gardens, 1300 acres of parkland with a herd of around 300 fallow deer.
Lincolnshire has so much to offer, from walking and family days out, to pony trekking and history to satisfy even the ardent history lover’s desires.
