Hampshire is a county in the south of England, and has borders with Dorset, Wiltshire, Surrey, Berkshire, and West Sussex.
The Hampshire coastline is on the English Channel and is separated by the Isle of Wight by the Solent, situated at its closest point, 2 miles from the coast. Up until 1890 the Isle of Wight was part of the county of Hampshire when it became a county in its own right. Hampshire’s main town is Winchester.
Winchester Cathedral opened in 1093 and is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe with the greatest overall length of any Gothic cathedral and a Nave height of 78 feet (24 m). Hampshire’s two largest cities are Southampton and Portsmouth.
The county is known for its stunning New Forest which is approximately 753.2 km. Situated at the southeastern edge of the New Forest National Park is the village of Beaulieu, which many will know as home to the National Motor Museum held within the grounds of the Beaulieu estate.
The county town of Hampshire is Winchester, the former capital city of England. Hampshire is the largest county in South East England and still remains the third largest shire county in the United Kingdom.
The county has two national parks and a thriving culture, full of history and heritage. This means plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling and exploring countryside and coastal pathways, as well as some very well kept heritage sites.
