I received the keys to my Swift Select 184 Motorhome and could not wait to get out there and get some testing and practice in. Stand by this next year for plenty of my journeys involving this vehicle that I will be out and about with around the country.
As a first go I needed somewhere lovely, quiet, but of course wanted some great surroundings for my outdoor and photography adventures. The Slingsby Camping and Caravan Club Site was perfect for my needs. I fuelled up, watered up, let’s go!
Even though it was early November, any bad weather was never going to stop me. Part of the adventure isn’t it? But on the contrary, it was perfect weather for a mini adventure and Slingsby Campsite was to be the perfect backdrop.
Slingsby is a small village that is wonderfully located between much that you would want to explore, see and do! It is right between the Howardian Hills to its south and just to the north you have the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.
The House and land of Castle Howard is not too far away at all plus Nunnington Hall, Newburgh Abbey, Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey. In fact it is only half an hour or so away from York. And the coastal towns of Whitby and Scarborough are well within reach for a day out.
The site is very quaint and not too large at all. Upon arrival you are greeted by the most lovely staff. In fact if you look at other reviews the warmth of the friendly staff here is a massive plus point.
Every pitch is electric hookup which is music to a motorhome users ears. The layout is great too with all ablutions and amenities centrally located.
For motorhomes you also have a service point where you can easily park and empty out the water etc. Makes life so much easier I find.
I found the site to be lovely and quiet the whole time I was there, with even plenty of quiet walks straight out the front of the gates. A tip is to take the old railway opposite that has been turned into a footpath for all.
But, there is also Slingsby Village itself of course on the doorstep. this a great walk around too. The part near the campsite is as if frozen in time. The ruins of the old castle can be seen from the high street near the church.
The village has another treat for those staying here. Within a few hundred metres there is a village pub, The Grapes, that not only provides you with a place to have a drink in the evening but they also have an extensive food menu for many tastes.
I soon realised my stay here was going to be too short. Not enough time to see all in the local surroundings. An excuse to head back here in Spring I feel. I love learning about new places and areas that I had never have thought of or found so easily.
The weather stayed perfect for us at least. There is something about motorhome travels that makes the outdoors so much more accessible. Plus the weather and scenes that much more enjoyable, away from distractions of every day life and keyboards. I was treated to glorious sunsets and sunrises I would not have noticed out of the window at home.
In summary, what was a motorhome practice turned into a special little trip. Slingsby Campsite is a Club Site of The Camping and Caravan Site and really worth checking out if heading to this part of Yorkshire.
