After arriving in the province of Saskatchewan and the City of Saskatoon it was time to head out of the city to the prairie. It was time to escape into the wilderness for some horse riding and ranch life experience.
I had arrived at the start of fall so to look out over the land the pale brown vistas meet the spectacular large skies in a way that only this part of the world can show. Deer jumping around through the fields., geese flocking in the skies, and this was only just entering the prairie.
My destination, La Reata Ranch in Saskatchewan. To experience a proper way of the cowboy, on horseback. La Reata Ranch is a special destination, offering an unforgettable experience for visitors. Nestled in the breathtaking prairie countryside, this ranch is known for its captivating natural beauty and array of exciting activities.
With its stunning views, diverse wildlife, and warm hospitality, La Reata Ranch provides a truly immersive escape from the bustling city life. Guests can indulge in a variety of attractions and activities including horseback riding, trail adventures, fishing or wild swimming in Lake Diefenbaker, wildlife viewing, and relaxation in the cozy accommodations.
Horse Riding Experience
After staring in wonder at the scenes around us, the host, George went and brought down the horses. Our rides for the day. The excitement grew as these splendid animals came down from the top of the hill, this was going to be one of those experiences you can never forget. Each horse looked splendid, which one was we going to get paired with?
I was given a great horse by the name of Scooter. Over I went went to give him a brushing and to saddle up. For me this was a whole new experience. For Scooter he had probable seen it so many times.
The sun was out, the scene was set, lets go!
I admit I was a novice but any adrenalin soon got outdone by the joy as I got going. First we went out down by the river, gentle and serene. Looking around hardly believing I was here doing this in this area. Everyone was loving it, you could feel it. Escape and adventure at its finest.
We turned away from the river, up and onto the prairie top and in the big wide open, this was living and Scooter thought so too as he started to pick up trots and gallops. Oh boy here we go.
This huge horse ride out onto the prairie was only a part of the stay here on the ranch but my word what an exhilarating experience.
Remember this is the land that people like the Indigenous Blackfoot and Crow travelled through and hunted Bison. It is now wide open land full of cattle that to me seem so far from anywhere.
Alas it was time eventually to head back to the ranch and let Scooter run off with his friends in the sunset.
Now that was a proper horse ride!
The Saloon
The fun didn’t stop there for us though. The steak meal that awaited us on our return was absolutely divine. Plus there was a tequila and lime cocktail to quench the thirst at the same time.
All before heading to the great authentic saloon for a good old Canadian beer…. or few.
