A remarkable area of Idaho we had entered as we travelled west. An afternoon comprising of Soda Springs Geyser, followed by relaxing in the lava hot springs. It seemed totally fitting to stop for the night at the Riverside Hot Springs Inn! Unique, homely, quiet, historical. Wonderful friendly hosts, fantastic food…. and their own natural lava pool tubs you can enjoy.
The hotel was built in 1914 by William Richard Godfrey, it is situated right by and overlooking the Portneuf River. Why here? It was a spot that had natural hot therapeutic mineral water and he had built into the hotel some special hot tubs for massage and healing. It would have been rude not to partake wouldn’t it? 🙂 The outside jacuzzi, filled with the natural lava spring water. What better way to have a nightcap under the stars beneath the mountain.
Inside the decor truly gives a warm homely feeling. A real friendly atmosphere is naturally created by this, together with the warmth given by all whom work there. After being on the Oregon Trail non stop over the last few days it was a point I truly sat back… and relaxed. The rooms are all individually decorated. King Rooms, double queen rooms and lots more.
Then wow.. the food! The Portneuf Grille and Lounge. Spoilt for choice. All was perfect. Starter examples include duck confit with apricot and ginger sauce, or I did love the bison-chorizo terrine with roasted red pepper coulis. Goats cheese and caramelised onions went down very well too.
For main meal you could really tell the chef absolutely enjoyed making perfect dishes and after a full on day on the road he knew exactly what we wanted. We got a chance to try various examples of the entrées. Fillet mignon, ahi tuna, BBQ ribs and more full on Bison-Chorizo. The potatoes, vegetables and salads that went with it all were perfect. If you have ever been on the road in the US you will understand my body was craving some wholesome, good, cooked food.
I could have stayed a whole lot longer, it was a shame to head back on the road so soon the next day. I must say a big thank you for the welcome and kindness we received there and I look forward to heading back whenever in the area. Good memories of the Riverside Hot Springs Inn.
