A Reykjavik Food Tour
One of the joys of foreign travel is exploring the food, flavours, and the dining culture of another country. I must admit, I had not considered Iceland as a gastronomic destination, with my pre-flight thoughts…
Iceland is a Nordic country, an island in the North Atlantic Ocean, with an area of 103,000 km2 (40,000 sq miles). The capital, Reykjavik, is where most of its population live and work. The country is renowned for its volcanically and geologically active areas, geysers, and hot springs.
One of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland is Gullfoss Falls, (Golden Falls). A two-tiered waterfall that drop into a crevice, it has a total height of 32 metres. Of the two falls, the longest drop is 21 metres.
Eyjafjallajökull is is one of the smaller ice caps in Iceland, north of Skógar and west of Mýrdalsjökull. The volcano famously erupted in 2010 causing air traffic chaos over western and northern Europe for over a week. A volcano with a summit elevation of 1,651 metres (5,417 ft), it is known for being extremely difficult to pronounce and is a popular search term on Google.
The capital, Reykjavik, runs on geothermal power and is also home to the National and Saga museums, tracing back Iceland’s Viking history. The country is also known as the land of the midnight sun. In early June every year, the sun in Iceland rises just after 3am, and continues shining until just before midnight, allowing only a few hours of half-darkness, until the summer solstice when the gap narrows significantly.
This remarkable island is chilly all year round. A world apart from most tourist destinations and has more to offer than you can imagine. There are no mosquitoes on the island of Iceland, but there are many legends of elves and trolls. Why not get more of a flavour of this stunning, rugged location from our authors’ articles and photography here.
