The kingdom of Morocco, which roughly translates to ‘place the sun sets; the west,’ can be found in North Africa. It’s a mountainous country that borders the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Morocco’s capital is Rabat, and it’s largest, and perhaps most famous, city is Casablanca.
Mt Toubkal is the highest summit in Morocco, situated in the Atlas mountain range and standing at 4,167 metres (13,671 ft). There are some amazing experiences to be had trekking the mountains, and discovering the remote villages and stunning scenery along the route. It’s a real trip of a lifetime, but probably not for the faint of heart.
The are other journeys to be had in Morocco that will take you to amazing heights and do not require such a trek. In fact, there are a few companies running hot air balloon trips from Marrakech and if you choose the right package, you can incorporate a camel ride too. Just be prepared to be up early, and as a bonus you’ll get to see the most amazing sunrise.
Old town Marrakech has the labyrinth-like walkways of the souks, filled with market holders. It’s a bustling space that eventually opens out into a large square with even more stalls. Jemaa el-Fna square is where the oddities of the souks are replaced by mayhem. It’s a sensory overload full of street hawkers, snake charmers, drummers, dancers, monkeys, and the smoke and sizzling meat in the food stalls.
Marrakech has been a trading city for more than 1000 years and its people are very friendly and welcoming to customers of all nationalities.
Morocco is a country where visitors can truly find it all. From mountain treks under the trained eye of a local guide, to the hustle and bustle of the city market, you’ll want to be sure to add this beautiful land to your travel bucket list.
