Queenstown, New Zealand. The ‘adventure capital of the world’! Associated with extreme bungy jumping, speed boating along canyons, skiing and so much more to get the blood pumping. However I took the time to engage in some of the stunning calmness in, amongst and around all that.
Nestled on the banks of an inlet of the gorgeous Lake Wakatipu, South Island, Queenstown can be widely viewed as a resort town. Actually I found it much more quaint and smaller than I had imagined it was going to be, in a good way. There is no end to choices for an evening out, bars and restaurants to suit absolutely every taste and a super atmosphere. I will be talking adventure of course separately but here I will show some beautiful calmness.
You only have to walk a couple of minutes from anywhere near the centre to hit the shoreline of the lake. I had the honour of blue skies and as you can see by the pics the shoreline can resemble some kind of tropical beach! Clear, such clear waters lapping against the edge. Absolutely stunning mountains rising in every way you look in 360 degrees. Time to chill, relax and sit. Watch the world go by in paradise.
A harbour, beneath a shady tree, or in a cafe overlooking the view. Or maybe at the fish and chips stall? Whatever takes your fancy there is room for all to sit in peace. The park by the lake is too a haven for varied calmness with lots of colour. Paths amongst gardens, a reflected river, and if you want to see the park/gardens all round with a bit of quirkiness it can be played as an 18 hole Frisbee Golf Course, free to use 😀
I found Queenstown is far from just a place for spending lots of money on adventure activities. Just look at the mountains like ‘The Remarkables’ that surround it and the lake. Walk freely for miles or climb on a whim. Ski down them in winter of course too. A non stop place that has plenty to stop and relax with. No matter how heavy your adventure tastes are… There is plenty. Unique
