Entrancing Views Along The A68

Lately have had the need to take the drive up to Edinburgh and back on a few occasions. A couple of hours drive but I must say one of the nicest couple of hours drive you can come across.

No motorways, no busy dual carriageways. Just you, the car, the A68 and miles and miles of beautiful scenery. Head off through the gorgeous hills of Northumberland for a start, up to the border with Scotland for a wonderful view from up the top then just head off through the borders with ever changing perfect countryside ahead, to the side and behind.

Amidst the fields and hills en route you occasionally come to places with deep history, Jeburgh (home of Mary Queen of Scots), Patthead and St Boswells to name just a few. The brown signs leading to tourist spots like castles, forests, ancient homes are scattered often along the way. Many of these I will be investigating further and separately real soon.

In what I do I have seen many miles of countryside all over Britain and the world. To watch a sunset anywhere in a calming peace is a time to savour. The border between Scotland and England high up at Carter Bar is one of those perfect spots.

The A68 here is not busy. The borderland of Scotland lays before you as the sun dips over the land. The sky turns orange and the miles of hill land below turns dark. A spectacle you can watch without leaving you car.

  1. One of my most memorable experiences is travelling along the A68 towing a caravan, going to Scotland. There are fabulous humps in the road that catch you unaware. We thought we were flying. Made us laugh uncontrollably. Looking forward to another ride up there.

I have been travelling the A68 a lot of times as a tour leader with Dutch guests and they loved it! It’s a wonderful road when travelling to Scotland and it’s lovely when leaving Scotland, because you will always remember those views! Splendid pictures Paul!

Lovely pictures, thanks for posting them. I used to travel this road a lot when I was a tour guide, bring German visitors up from Hull through York and Northumberland to Scotland. To my mind, it’s the best route to pass from England into Scotland, wild and romantic and mysterious on both sides of the border.

  10. Truly beautiful – thank you for these!

And this is why I want to visit. Sure, there are some great cities like London and Edinburgh but it’s the English countryside with its serene countryside that make me want to explore. This is the side of Britain that I want to see. I love how the signs for England and Scotland are on a rock. In this area, they seem appropriate – so much better than a sign.
