History of Mauldons Brewery
Mauldons Brewery holds a special place in the history of Suffolk and the British brewing industry. Founded in 1795 by Anna Maria Mauldon who had started brewing ales for her customers’ consumption at White Horse Inn, in Sudbury, Suffolk and then nearby at the Bull Hotel. Today you can see a nod to the beginnings with the White Horse in the logo.
Anna Maria went into partnership with her son, and the company, that for at least the next century was known as A.M. Mauldon & Son. They went on to buy other pubs to tie in, as well as building a larger purpose brewery by The White Horse to meet demand.
The brewery remained in the Mauldon family for over 7 generations and by the mid 20th century it also had nearly 30 tied pubs within Suffolk.
In 1960, John Christie Mauldon sold the brewery and pubs to Greene King & Sons who sadly then let much of the premises fade away.
Then, in 1982, Peter Mauldon, who held a position in the family line all the way back to Anna Maria, brought back Mauldons Brewery in Sudbury, Suffolk, and established another site on Chilton Industrial Estate. The brewery is now owned by Charlie Buckle and it is still in the hands of a passionate local family.
Over the years, Mauldons has witnessed an evolution of brewing techniques and tastes, adapting to the changing demands of beer enthusiasts while staying true to its roots.
Mauldons’ beers are crafted using the finest malted barley, hops, and water sourced from the local region. In fact, the barley is grown by the Buckle family’s own farm and Nedging Hall Estate which not only keeps the ingredients locally sourced but enables a reduction of the ecological footprint.
The brewery’s commitment to excellence is evident in every drop of beer they produce. With a combination of traditional brewing methods and modern innovations, Mauldons continues to create beers that are loved by both locals and visitors alike. Their dedication to preserving the rich brewing heritage of Suffolk is evident in the quality and craftsmanship of each beer they produce.
Today, Mauldons offers a diverse range of beers that cater to every taste preference.

Suffolk Pride
As the flagship beer of the brewery, Suffolk Pride is a traditional English bitter that showcases the classic flavours of malt and hops. With its rich amber color and balanced bitterness, this beer is a true representation of Mauldons’ commitment to traditional brewing.
Tasting notes: Pouring a deep amber color, Suffolk Pride greets the palate with a malty sweetness and a hint of caramel. The balanced bitterness adds a refreshing crispness, making it an enjoyable beer to savour with friends or pair with hearty dishes.
Black Adder Stout
This award-winning stout is a favorite among beer enthusiasts who appreciate the robust flavours of roasted malt and dark chocolate. With its silky smooth texture and hints of coffee, Black Adder Stout offers a truly indulgent drinking experience. Ok, I must admit I am not normally a stout drinker but I really find this one delightful. If I really want a tasty one off drink to savour then I find myself grabbing a Black Adder.
Tasting notes: This rich and velvety stout delights the senses I sense hints of roasted nut, coffee and bitter dark chocolate. The smooth mouthfeel and full-bodied flavor make it a perfect choice for those seeking a beer that is both comforting and indulgent.
Silver Adder
This pale ale is what I would say is very moreish and goes down so very well. With its tinges of citrus and crisp taste, if you are a lager fan and want to try a new beer then Silver Adder is one for the list.
Tasting notes: Silver Adder showcases a pale golden colour and citrus and crisp finish that entices the senses. Not heavy at all and is a great session beer for lager lovers.
Mole Trap
A flavourful and aromatic beer that is definitely a session bitter. It really does have a crisp hoppiness to it and medium body that makes it enjoyable to drink. Mole Trap is a satisfying beer with a unique character.
Tasting notes: Extremely crisp and refreshing. Hoppy flavours on tasting that combines great with the malt flavouring coming through. A really refreshing drink.
Ploughmans
Ploughmans Golden Ale by Mauldons is a refreshing and flavourful beer that is also Gluten Free. With a smooth taste and a hint of citrus, it has a balanced hoppy bitterness and a crisp finish, making it enjoyable for all year round.
