Who doesn’t love a sausage roll and what’s better than a lovely homemade one, fresh out of the oven? This is an easy way to make your own delicious sausage rolls.

People often imagine the sausage roll is a classic British food. Meat wrapped within pastry, however, was eaten as far back as Ancient Greece and during the time of the Romans. The modern version of the meal we know as a sausage roll actually comes from early 19th Century France.

In the early 1800s it became a popular cheap street food in London and thus became a very British dish.

You can make one large one or several smaller ones, filled with different tasty accents, or you may choose to keep it plain. You can also make it vegetarian by using meat free sausage meat if you prefer.

  • Herbs to taste

  • 1 Egg

  • Flour to stop the pastry sticking to the paper

  • Fillings can include
  • stuffing

  • cheese

Directions

  • Line your baking tray with baking paper. This will stop the pastry sticking to the tray.
  • Sprinkle a little flour over the baking paper and rub around the paper.
  • Unroll your pastry and place over the baking paper.
  • Get out your sausage meat or vegetarian alternative and add some herbs or spices to your taste by massaging them into the meat.

  • If you are adding stuffing to your sausage roll. Take out the stuffing mix and add the required amount of boiling water and a little bit of butter to make it extra moist.
  • Add your additional fillings if you would like to. You can use relish, cheese or stuffing or any other garnish that you would like on the top of the meat.meat, stuffing and cheese
  • Beat the egg in a cup or bowl and then, using the pastry brush, add some egg to each side of the pastry. This will help the pastry to stay in place while it’s cooking.
  • Fold the pastry over to cover the meat and seal the ends with a bit more of the egg.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut the pastry horizontally along the top. Make small cuts and this will help the steam escape and the pastry to breathe and not crack whilst it is cooking. Then brush your sausage roll with the remaining egg.uncooked roll
